Group Therapy

Group Therapy

As much as we believe pain is unique to us, we are not suffering on our own.

Connection and vulnerability can be great catalysts for improvement in our lives.  It is in those interactions that we can find the key to setting our healing processes in motion.

Some of us have encountered comfort in sharing our emotions with family members, partners, or friends.  While others may be in search of ways to bond outside of their close circles.  There is significant value in building platforms to celebrate how interconnected we are in our joys and trials.

Anxiety, depression, anger, self-esteem, and work dissatisfaction, are among the issues we deal with every day—note the emphasis on the “WE” of such experiences.

You are not alone in what ails you.

Group therapy presents an excellent opportunity to participate in a healing environment with other individuals who share your struggle and desire for growth.  This kinship encourages the level of connection needed to observe the areas you want to improve and take steps to make those changes a reality.

My name is Christian Holmes, and I’m an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (AMFT) Registration #120391 under the supervision of Mark W. Baker, Ph.D. Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist #MFT19289.  I offer group therapy services in California, focused on supporting individuals dealing with anxiety, depression, and self-esteem issues, as well as business owners, entrepreneurs, and creatives.

My goal is to provide an open setting where you can manage the challenges you face, help others in their journey, and learn strategies to apply outside of therapy.

If you are struggling and searching for support, connection, and healing, group therapy may be a great option for you.

What Is Group Therapy?

Group therapy is a form of psychotherapy led by one or more therapists who offer counseling to groups of five to 15 people at the same time.

The goal of group therapy is to create a learning and processing space where individuals can support one another with the guidance of a therapist.  It allows members to discuss specific mental health challenges, share their experiences, and develop skills to overcome their difficulties.

Groups can concentrate on a single mental health issue or address various topics.  Some center on shifting problematic patterns (cognitive behavioral groups) or using members’ exchanges as a path to recovery (process-oriented groups).  Others focus on honing specific abilities (skills development groups) and learning effective coping mechanisms (psychoeducational groups).

Group therapy thrives on connection and interaction.  To fully experience what this treatment can offer, you will be encouraged to tell your story and support others along the way.  Of course, you will not be forced or pressured to participate if you are not comfortable doing so.

Some of the benefits of group therapy include:

  • Fostering hope within your struggle
  • Decreasing isolation as you find people who share your difficulties
  • Connecting and gaining motivation through opportunities to help others
  • Developing coping strategies and ways to apply them daily
  • Role-playing interpersonal dynamics and learning how to enhance them
  • Building lasting relationships with other like-minded individuals

Do I Need Group Therapy?

Group therapy can help with a variety of symptoms across a diverse demographic, including adults, children, and teenagers.

Some of the symptoms or challenges group therapy can address include:

  • Anger management
  • Anxiety
  • Chronic stress
  • Communication problems
  • Depression
  • Eating disorders
  • Grief and loss
  • Job or work dissatisfaction
  • Relationship issues
  • Struggles with self-esteem
  • Trauma or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • And more!

If you or someone in your life is experiencing any of these symptoms, group therapy can support you.  However, if you are not suffering, this treatment can still help you sharpen your social skills, create interpersonal connections, and strengthen your relationships outside of therapy.

How Can Group Therapy Help Me?

Group therapy can complement and expand on what may be experienced in individual therapy sessions.  The focus on connection within a group setting, under the facilitation of a therapist, contributes to your recovery and growth.

Here are three ways in which group therapy can help you:

Finding Hope

Group therapy is based on the idea that others face similar setbacks and have the desire to improve their lives, just like you do.  Within this universality and bond with other group members, you can regain hope for the future and open yourself up to healing.

Cultivating Relational Support

Group therapy gives you the chance to recreate relational patterns and better understand how you can lead healthier interactions.  You will grow by observing and getting feedback from other participants, processing issues as a group, and listening to your therapist’s recommendations.  Plus, you will develop trusting relationships that bring you closer to other individuals and allow you to share in their transformation.

Learning Practical Strategies

Group therapy provides effective strategies to navigate your present and future challenges.  The goal is to broaden your perspective, equip you with evidence-based tools, and hold you accountable as you embark on a more wholesome life.
